‘Art is for everyone; art will help us through tough times’ - Sir Grayson Perry

Sir Grayson Perry’s upcoming show Smash Hits is hosted by Edinburgh’s Royal Scottish Academy this July. The exhibition showcases his seismic 40-year career. In his own words: ‘Oh my god the man hours’.

Smash Hits - what to expect

Expect to be blown away by the sheer magnitude of the work on display. Over eighty works, including large fascinating tapestries, imaginary maps, prints, sculptures and of course the famous subversive ceramic plates and pots. Expect social commentaries and razor sharp wit throughout.

Perry has a unique and wonderful talent for juxtaposing two opposing worlds. One contained within the realms of polite pottery and tapestry making - and other gentrified craftsmanships. And the second world is the countercultural found in punk: masculinity, sexuality, class, religion, violence, politics and identity.

By sharing his imaginative responses in the way he experiences the world, through his often complex expressions in art, he has also inspired others to give it go. Particularly through the medium of Grayson’s Art Club.

He has a talent for making art accessible and yet often strives to express the inexpressible. If you’re a fan then you’ll be familiar with his complex relationship with his teddy, Alan Measles. He’s kept with him since infancy. Alan is a significant talisman to his art making practice and also a symbol of the emotional transformative power of art.

Grayson Perry: Smash Hits is not chronological but grouped by theme. You are sure to be struck by the share magnitude of the eclectic works on display. Though it is always good to remember that the superstar potter’s career started with an evening pottery classes. Perry has gone on to win the Turner Prize as well as TV presenting and writing acclaimed books.Art is indeed for everyone.

Grayson Perry: Smash Hits, Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, Saturday 22 July 2023 - Sunday 12 November 2023. Ticket information can be found here. Concessionary tickets are also available and friends of the gallery can enjoy the show for free.
